3.1 Reference material and documentation is accessible and available within the unit.

The 6th annual head and neck cancer audit report by the NHS Information centre in conjunction with the British Association of Head and Neck Oncologists can be accessed by clicking here. This annual report looks at how all head and neck units perform with regard to referral, MDT planning and treatment etc.
NICE produced a document in 2004 - subsequently updated in 2010 called - ' Improving Outcomes in Head and Neck Cancers' The manual.

3.2 Staff are encouraged to undertake research training and development.
Members of the Head and Neck PDU who have completed the research module on their degree programme have donated their work to the PDU for all staff to access.

A dissemination of research information by multi-professional staff from the Head and Neck PDU was at the national BAOMS / ENT UK conference in September 2011. This programme included Physiotherapists, Nurse practitioners and Consultant surgeons from Aintree discussing their research work to a national audience. Click here to see the programme.
Another opportunity for Aintree staff to undertake research development is at the annual 'Aintree Head and Neck Oncology Group' (AHNOG) meeting - where yearly service audits are presented as well as a large number of presentations on current head and neck research taking place in within the unit as well as its academic links.

Another example of disseminating research information to Multi-professional staff was the Patient Concerns Inventory Workshop held on the 3rd November 2011-Click here for the programme.
Small scale projects involving novice practitioners include:
(i) Cophenylcaine use in nasendoscope project. This project is looking at the litereture as well as clinician evidence on the usage of cophenylcaine use in nasendoscopy. The project personnel is made up of Nursing staff, Pharmacy staff, Clinic Staff, Surgical staff and Multi-professionals. Click here for minutes from an early planning meeting.
(ii) A research project by a Tissue Viability Nurse at Aintree included participation by a range of multi-professionals including - infection control staff, Academic staff from Salford and Edge Hill as well as Surgical staff and crucially nursing staff from the Head and Neck Practice Development Unit at Aintree. (iii) A research project led by Senior Physiotherapist Barry Scott and involving senior research personnel on the subject of trismus in patients following surgery for head and neck cancer was published in the British Journal of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery in February 2010 - Click here to read the article.
3.3 Individual and collaborative research projects are in progress within the unit.
(a)
(i)The Audiology team have been developing a research project with Head and Neck Surgical staff on the effects of chemotherapy on hearing loss. Click here for planning information on the project.

(ii)The Head and Neck Practice Development Unit is heavily involved in Oncology Clinical Trials and National Studies. This involvement includes the development and sponsoring of national trials / studies and being a centre for other nationally generated studies.
The Head and Neck PDU has staff members who are linked to Academic Institutions and national bodies such as Cancer Research UK to work on the development of these trials as well as a designated clinical trials team in Aintree's Research and Development department. Clinical Trials also involves a large number of staff from the Head and Neck PDU:
* Clerical Staff - Data Officers * Secretarial Staff * Clinic Nurses * Radiological Staff
* Surgical Staff * Oncology Staff * Nursing staff * Clinical Nurse Specialists
* Anaesthetic staff. All working together in the screening, recruitment and maintenece of patients through the clinical trials protocols.

(iii) The Head and Neck PDU has a large number of Research Articles published. The Head and Neck website has a searchable database for anyone to access articles that have been generated by the unit.

3.4 Completed local research reports, individual and collaborative, are available within the unit.

3.5 Staff demonstrate an awareness of up to date evidence/research pertinent to their practice.

3.6 Research findings are disseminated in the unit and within the Trust.
(i) The Lunchtime Seminars provide a platform for professionals to speak to Aintree staff about current research being carried out in the unit and where the research is going.

3.7 Research findings are disseminated within the National and International health and social care arena.

(iv) Paul Banks, Charlotte Halpin and Dominic Macareavey from the Patient Research Forum presented a seminar to Students from Edge Hill University on the subject of Research into Practice in March 2012. Click here to see the presentation.
