Urban musher goes coast to coast

Dr Chris Mimnagh, and his pet Siberian Husky Mishka and Irish Collie Millie, are setting off on a coast to coast run to raise funds for Head and Neck Cancer research and support and the Dogs Trust. Setting off from Fort William on Tuesday 27th March, this intrepid trio hope to reach Inverness a gruelling four days later, setting a new record in the process.

Dr Mimnagh, Kirkby GP and Director of Strategy and Innovation at Aintree Hospital, will be riding a specially designed Pawtrekker scooter for the 70 mile coast-to-coast trip. His son Michael will ride ahead, acting as a team leader or 'hare' for the dogs to follow.

They will be supported by Rich Abley, area business manager for Barclays Bank, which has generously agreed to match fund the sponsorship they raise.

If you would like to sponsor the team, please donate via Chris's just giving website:

So - here's wishing Chris and his team the very best of luck. Needless to say, we are all hoping for good weather and fast paws!

In addition to encouraging people to get involved in activities specifically to raise funds for head and neck cancer research and support, this year we are also getting involved in some joint events.
Do you fancy leaping from a tall building?
Would you like to join a team of people who would like to participate in a 150ft free fall abseil over the main entrance of Liverpool Cathedral ?

Anyone over the age of 18 in a good state of medical and fitness health can participate, and no prior experience is necessary. Our own Ed Grocott has already said he is going to join in - apparently the views across the city are truly spectacular!

So if you want to give it a go, and are available on either Friday 10th August or Saturday 11th August (exact date still to be finalized), please give your details to Lindsay on LINDSAY.TILSTON-JONES@aintree.nhs.uk
Alternatively - would you like to jump out of aeroplane?
Again, we are looking for brave people who would like to experience perhaps the ultimate adrenaline high for a good cause. Plans are still being drawn up, but if you are interested, please contact Lindsay on LINDSAY.TILSTON-JONES@aintree.nhs.uk
Finally, if you prefer to keep your feet rather more firmly on the ground, and are thinking about entering the Liverpool Half Marathon, the 10k tunnel run, the full Liverpool Marathon, or indeed any running event, we would love to hear from you.
A group of like-minded people, who would like to have a bit of company and support in their running and fundraising, is being set up -informally referred to as the Aintree 'Arriers. Again, this is a pan-hospital initiative, involving staff, patients, carers and friends, with the aim of raising funds for two of Aintree University Hospitals Charitable Funds - one of which is (of course) head and neck cancer research and support.
If you want to get involved, please do get in contact with Paul on: PAUL.BANKS@aintree.nhs.uk
We've been in contact with Liverpool Running Club, who would be happy for members of the team to join them in their training sessions locally, and we are also considering taking part in some 5km timed runs organised by Parkrun every Saturday morning at Princes Park.
In addition, Richard Webster - an ultra-marathon runner, who helped raise funds for Head and Neck Cancer research and support last year, has offered to hold a motivational session and some training days if enough people are interested.
In the meantime it's never too late to get involved, so if you are interested please do contact Paul. And if you're worried that 10k is just too a bit too far for your first race, then don't worry - we're looking into some shorter events too!

Dinner Party Diva
Finally, after her sterling works in organising the Golf Day last year, Jackie Gregson is going to be running her own fundraising dinner party. A small event for family and friends, it's an excellent way of raising funds, trying out some new recipes, in a relaxed and social environment.
If you'd like to do something similar, please let us know. Jackie would be delighted to discuss her plans with you, and of course we can provide you with any fundraising materials you need.
