IMPACT trial
This study evaluated the effect of specific nutritional supplements on reducing complications after major head and neck cancer. Patients had nutritional feed for five days before surgery and until discharge from hospital. Good nutrition helps wound healing and helps to reduce the chance of infection. Patients were invited to be randomised to have either additional standard feed or immuni-enhanced feed.
2b neck dissection
The purpose of this trial was to find out if by avoiding dissection of the small amount of 'lymphatic tissue' above the accessory nerve that accessory nerve function is better. The primary end point is EMG studies and the secondary endpoints are HRQOL/ shoulder questionnaires and a shoulder examination. Patients agreeing to take part need to have an EMG study pre-operatively and at six weeks post-op. The outcome of this study might mean that we can should be even more selective in the functional neck dissections.
EASTER Trial
This trial was for patients with early laryngeal cancer. The two treatment arms were either primary radiotherapy or laser excision. Cure rates were expected to be the same and an assessment made on function and treatment burden.
